What is the TRV and eTA process?

Canada allows the entry of international visitors through the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Both documents are essential for those wishing to enter the country for tourism, work, or business purposes, depending on their nationality and mode of entry.

Who is eligible for a TRV or eTA?

  • eTA: Citizens of visa-exempt countries entering by air.

  • TRV: Citizens of non-visa-exempt countries visiting Canada by any means (air, land, or sea).

Exceptions:

  • U.S. citizens do not need a visa or eTA.

  • Green card holders require an eTA to enter by air.

How do you apply for an eTA and a TRV?

Process for eTA:

  • Complete an online form with personal information.

  • Review the application and make the payment using a credit or debit card.

  • Receive the authorization via email shortly after.

Process for TRV:

  • Prepare the application with identity documents and proof of financial funds.

  • Undergo a medical examination if required.

  • Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) depending on the country of origin.
