Who is eligible for family sponsorship?

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must not have failed to meet previous sponsorship commitments.

  • Spouse or common-law partner.

  • Dependent children (under 22 years old or older with medical conditions that prevent them from being financially self-sufficient).

  • Parents and grandparents (with proof of sufficient income).

  • Orphaned siblings, nephews, or grandchildren under 18 years old, unmarried, and without a spouse or partner.

How can one apply for family sponsorship?

  1. Application preparation: Gather documents that prove the family relationship, such as marriage, birth, or adoption certificates.

  2. Complete forms: Each sponsorship requires specific forms depending on the type of family member being sponsored.

  3. Medical exams and background checks: Sponsored family members must undergo medical exams and provide police reports.

  4. Submit the application: Send it to IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) for evaluation.

  5. Review and decision: IRCC reviews the case and may request interviews or additional documents before making a decision.

Commitments and responsibilities of the sponsor:

The sponsor must sign a financial commitment, in which they agree to:

  • Provide financial support for the basic needs of the sponsored family member (housing, food, healthcare).

  • Reimburse the government for any social assistance received by the sponsored individual.

  • Maintain this commitment for a period of 3 to 20 years, depending on the type of family member sponsored.

    • The spouse or common-law partner of the parents or grandparents can be included.

  • Other Eligible Relatives

    • Orphaned siblings, nephews, or grandchildren under 18 years old and unmarried.

    • Sponsorship is not allowed for relatives whose parents' whereabouts are unknown or who are under the care of third parties.
