What is a study permit?

A study permit is a document issued by the Government of Canada that allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs). It also provides opportunities to work and, eventually, access permanent residency programs.

Who needs a study permit?

You must apply for a study permit if:

  • You plan to enroll in a program longer than six months in Canada.

  • You have been accepted by a designated learning institution (DLI).

  • You meet the financial and eligibility requirements.

A permit is not required for:

  • Courses or programs of less than six months.

  • Family members of diplomats or military personnel in Canada.

How to apply for a study permit?

  1. Letter of Acceptance: Obtain a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution.

  2. Application Preparation: Gather necessary financial, identity documents, and forms.

  3. Submit the Application: Apply from outside Canada, within the country, or at a port of entry.

  4. Medical Exam and Background Check: In some cases, these will be required to complete the application.

  5. Receive the Permit: After approval, the study permit is granted for the duration of the academic program.
